Deutsche Telekom is planning to start offering 3D content on-demand on its IPTV service ‘T-Home Entertain’ from early September, according to a company spokesperson speaking at a press event in Hamburg.
The new content will be launched during the international consumer electronics fair IFA held in Berlin in September. At first only 3D movies will be offered, but the telco has already started discussions with the national football association DFL and hopes to add Bundesliga games at a later date, according to the telco.

The open Internet-connected TV platform Project Canvas could be ready to engage with content and service providers as soon as September. If it comes to fruition, Project Canvas should be available to all ISPs that want it, offering a range of on-demand services through broadband Internet and a television set. All content will be in one place without any subscription required, so in effect anybody with a broadband connection will be able to use it.

At the 5th China International 3D World Forum & Exhibition in Shenzhen, China, I presented “3D Decoding and 3D Output Considerations for Set-top Boxes and Blu-ray Players.” Sigma Designs was a sponsor this time, since the turnout was so great when I presented at the Fall 2009 show (~250 attendees each time). Lots of work being done on 3DTV in China.

South Korea’s major IPTV service providers plan to ride on the current 3DTV boom by launching 3D services in the latter half of this year, following plans by the terrestrial, cable, and satellite providers to start 3D services on a trial basis.

There’s an interesting article in the Jan/Feb 2010 issue of SMPTE’s Motion Imaging Journal that discusses using dynamic reframing to enable traditional content to be automatically and real-time adopted to the constraints of hand-held devices. It basically identifies regions of interest, then zooms in on these regions.
