“Avatar” is coming to 3D Blu-ray on Dec. 1, but will only be available with the purchase of Panasonic 3D TVs and Blu-ray players. Needless to say, lots of 3D enthusiasts are very unhappy about all the exclusive bundling going on.

Clearleap, a web based TV technology platform, and Related Content Database, Inc. (RCDb) today announced a joint solution that will give pay TV operators the ability to deliver their full VOD libraries to any subscriber with an internet connected Blu-Ray player. The joint solution was unveiled for the first time at the CableLabs Summer Conference August 16th and 17th in Keystone, Colorado. The Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem LLC (DECE LLC), a cross-industry consortium dedicated to driving a new, open market for digital content distribution, today announced its consumer brand – UltraViolet™. UltraViolet represents a new way for consumers to have greater choice, confidence and freedom in how, when and where they enjoy digital movies, TV shows and other entertainment. In addition, the consortium announced three additional new members bringing the total to nearly 60 member companies. Complementing the physical DVD and Blu-ray home entertainment markets, UltraViolet will allow consumers to watch their digital entertainment across multiple platforms, such as connected TVs, PCs, game consoles, smartphones and tablet PCs, in an easy, consistent way. Since all UltraViolet offerings will work together, consumers will be able to select which products and devices they prefer from a spectrum of familiar companies – ranging from major studios to consumer electronics companies to cable, web and other service providers. In addition, the UltraViolet name and logo will help identify entertainment products and services designed to work together seamlessly. Redbox president Mitch Lowe revealed that the company will probably price rentals of Blu-ray titles at $1.50 a night, or half a dollar more than the usual price to rent DVDs from Redbox kiosks. At the 5th China International 3D World Forum & Exhibition in Shenzhen, China, I presented “3D Decoding and 3D Output Considerations for Set-top Boxes and Blu-ray Players.” Sigma Designs was a sponsor this time, since the turnout was so great when I presented at the Fall 2009 show (~250 attendees each time). Lots of work being done on 3DTV in China. |
